From “Individual Person” to “Public Man”: How Does Moral Education Cultivate People's Public Character

Abstract:

With the coming of the Individualized Society, modern life and modern education develop people's subject consciousness and independent personality, and at the same time, it also strengthen the competitive individualism and possessive learning style. It encourages young students indulge in a lonely and individualized process of knowledge learning and examination of competition, weakened the close connection between individuals and others, individuals and community life, eventually led to the produce of lonely and cold “individual person”. The “individual person” is not suitable for the socialist democracy under the rule of law. It needs “public man” who has public rational spirit and public moral qualities. Therefore, it is necessary for moral education to undertake the education mission of cultivating “public man”, and promote the construction of democratic and legal society while promoting the healthy personality of youngsters. On this basis, moral education should promote the educating of public reason, public value, public spirit, and public action,and then realize the educational mission of cultivating “public man”.
