Abstract:

Based on data from China Family Tracking Survey 2016(CFPS 2016), the paper studied the impact of teacher salary index on students' participation in private tutoring through a two-level linear model. The result showed that the primary and secondary school teachers' salary index has a significant negative effect on students' participation in private tutoring. The higher the index, the lower the participate rate. Governments at all levels should increase financial investment in teachers' salaries in primary and secondary schools, and try to improve the level of teachers' salaries with the teachers' salary index as the reference standard, which will help reduce the supply and demand of after-class tutoring in the field of elementary education in China, and also provide a strong policy guarantee for prohibiting in-service teachers from participating in after-class tutoring.
