Abstract:

As global demand for talent evolves, educational philosophies have gradually progressed to address the increasingly complex dynamics of the modern era, and interdisciplinary education has become the mainstream. As an important link between disciplines, interdisciplinary training has become increasingly important in the context of the new liberal arts. The integration of journalism and communication with management and economics is seen as a trend in future academic development, fostering innovation and deep exploration in cross-disciplinary fields. By conducting an in-depth examination of journalism and communication interdisciplinary programs across 69 institutions worldwide and utilizing data visualization methods, this study explored the performance of interdisciplinary programs in journalism and communication with management and economics from three dimensions: training objectives, curriculum design, and career development. The focus is on analyzing the two training models of “upholding tradition” and “fostering innovation”: the former achieves deep integration through core management and economics courses, emphasizing the cultivation of hard skills; while the latter broadens students’ skill sets through dual-major programs, focusing on foundational courses and the development of soft skills, to nurture future leaders with comprehensive abilities.

Key words: New Liberal Arts, interdisciplinary education, journalism and communication, talent cultivation
